When it comes to choosing a self-storage unit, one of the main decisions you'll face is whether to go with a drive-up unit or a climate-controlled unit. At Sebastian Quality Storage in Sebastian, FL, we have both options ready to rent for you and at super affordable prices! We came up with a little breakdown to help you make an informed decision!

Drive-Up Storage Units

Drive-up storage units are like garage spaces where you can park your car directly in front of the unit, making it easy to load and unload items. These units are typically not temperature-controlled and are exposed to the external weather conditions.

Advantages:

  1. Convenient Access: You can drive up directly to your unit, which is ideal for heavy or bulky items like furniture, tools, or equipment. This makes loading and unloading much easier compared to units located inside a building.

  2. Cost-Effective: Generally, drive-up units are more affordable than climate-controlled options, which can help you save money, especially if you’re storing items that aren’t sensitive to temperature fluctuation or changes.

  3. Flexible Storage: These units are great for items like garden tools, bikes, outdoor furniture, and other things that don’t need a controlled environment.

Ideal for Storing:

  • Tools and equipment

  • Recreational vehicles (RVs, motorcycles, ATVs)

  • Seasonal items like holiday decorations

  • Items that can withstand temperature fluctuations

Climate-Controlled Storage Units

Climate-controlled units are located inside a building and maintain a consistent temperature and humidity level year-round. This helps protect sensitive items from extreme weather conditions, humidity, and moisture.

Advantages:

  1. Protection from Temperature Changes: Climate control helps prevent damage to items that can warp, crack, or deteriorate in extreme hot or cold temperatures. This makes it ideal for storing items year-round, no matter what the weather is like.

  2. Indoor Access: Most climate control units are accessed inside a building which means you aren't subject to the elements and can visit your storage unit at any time, rain or shine.

Ideal for Storing:

  • Electronics (TVs, computers, sound systems)

  • Antiques and collectibles

  • Leather furniture

  • Musical instruments

  • Clothing, especially delicate fabrics

So.. Which One Should YOU Choose?

  • Drive-Up Storage is a great option if you’re looking for easy access and don’t need special temperature controls. If you’re storing durable items, tools, or equipment, this could be the more economical and practical choice. Think of it as - anything you would store in a garage or outside space - you can store in a drive-up storage unit.

  • Climate-Controlled Storage is ideal if you’re storing items that are sensitive to temperature changes, such as electronics, antiques, mattresses and leather items. Although it costs a bit more, if the items you are storing are more delicate, it may be worth it to you.

Both types of self storage units have their benefits, but the right choice depends on what you’re storing, your budget, and your needs. We would also consider the types of items you’re storing, how often you'll be going to your unit and of course, your budget. If you’re unsure, it’s often better to err on the side of caution and go for a climate-controlled unit, especially if you’re storing some more delicate items. And always make sure to get tenant insurance or add your storage unit to your existing homeowners policy to make sure you have protection (storage facilities do not insure stored items as it is not their property).
